The surface you actually slip on

Ice does more damage than snow. A freeze-thaw cycle turns cleared snow into a sheet on the driveway and steps, and in Ontario that is both a genuine injury risk and, for the sidewalk, often a legal responsibility.

Your provider breaks up and clears the ice that has formed, then treats the surface so it does not immediately re-form. Treating before a freeze is far more effective than chipping afterwards.

Good to know — Tell your provider what the surface is. Rock salt damages new concrete, harms plants at the edges and is unsafe around pets — there are alternatives, but they need to be planned for.
